We have had a super week in Squirrels making a great start on our curriculum learning. The children are all now used to the routines in class and have adapted to the new version of school really well. You should be very proud of their resilience and how they have embraced changes.
In English we have been studying Zoo by Anthony Browne. This week we have been learning about the characters and how we can read between the lines to understand what they may all be thinking.
We were very proud of they way they have learned their spellings this week and we thank you for helping them with these. They are asked to tick the ones they got right on the list in their books from last Friday. That way you can see their progress and revisit any that were wrong. This week’s list 2 spellings are in their books to learn ready for the test next Friday. Last week we did a check on the Year 1 and 2 spellings that they should have learned by the end last term. We have put a list in their bags to show you which ones they got right. Please can you help them to learn any that are not yet ticked off as these are essential words that are used all of the time in their writing.
In Year 3, reading is done through a class reading book and individual reading. We aim to hear all children read each week and will change their books if needed at this time. We will change books more often if really needed but as staff have to do this now rather than children due to Covid restrictions, we hope you will understand that it can not always be done as soon as a child finishes a book at home. Please feel free to read any other books and newspapers at home as a wide range of reading materials can really help children to develop reading skills. Please remember to ask children lots of questions to check their understanding of the story and individual words. We expect most children to read at home for a few minutes several times a week. Please make a quick note in their diary to show what they have done and any issues.
In Maths this week, we have been revising last year’s work and introducing new work on place value. On the Maths section of our class page, I have put the yearly plan and the objectives to be covered in the first block of about 3 weeks. I will update this as we progress through the year.
Times tables are a very big focus this year as they are essential to most areas of Maths. By the end of year 2, children should have known 2, 5 and 10 times tables with quick recall. They should also understand how to use the inverse to find division facts. For example, 2x5=10 and 10÷5 =2. We will spend a little time securing these facts and then move on to 3, 4 and 8 times tables which have to be learned by the end of year 3. By the end of year 4 children should know all multiplication and division facts to 12x12 and will take a national assessment. Please help your child with learning their times tables so they feel confident. All children now have log on details for Times Tables Rock Stars, Maths Shed/ Spelling Shed in their homework diaries. In school we have a league table to show which class is achieving most points using TTRS and Spelling Shed.
Just to let you know, the school photographer will be in school on Wednesday 30th September.
We hope you all have a lovely weekend and enjoy the best of the sunshine.
