We are over half way into our first half term in Year 5! This week we have really settled into the year group; they have worked super hard!
Our English has been a mixture of finishing one unit and starting another. We started the week finishing up our hot write and publishing it for our writing wall. They have tried so hard with their presentation and I'm feeling a few pen licenses might be making their appearance in the near future... On Thursday, we started our new unit all about newspaper reports which we are linking to World War II. We learnt about the troubles in Coventry and read our WAGOLL. We acted it out to really understand what is included in a newspaper report and today we have found the toolkit in the model text.
In Maths, we have started our unit on addition and subtraction and have done a brilliant job! We have mostly focused on column addition and subtraction but also mental strategies and rounding to estimate. Next week we will continue with addition and subtraction but apply it to some tricky problems!
In Topic we have started looking at childhood and what it may have been like to have been a child in WWII. We have looked at primary and secondary sources about evacuation and planned our evacuee letter that will be written next week. In PE we finally managed to get outside for netball but then the rain came so we finished off with some benchball indoors; one day we will get a full PE lesson! On Monday, our PSHE lesson was all about how to turn negative thoughts into positive ones and we wrote some beautiful positive affirmations. Our singing is coming along beautifully with Clair and Catherine and in a few weeks the children will start learning on their flute. Before this can happen, we are busy learning about pitch, tempo and rhythm and how music can be represented. We started our unit on online safety this week and carried on with our science today - learning about what items are soluble and which are insoluble. See if you can find any items at home that could be investigated!
If your children are tired this Friday, I think you know why! Have a lovely weekend and I shall see you on Monday!
