We have had a fantastic week this week and we have been super creative this week! Look below to see what we have been doing.
In our Maths learning this week, we have been focusing on addition as our new unit is addition and subtraction to 20. We have been using ten frames and number lines to do some addition sums. We have also been representing them using part-whole models! Look at the pictures below to see some of our working out!
Can you try some of these games below to test your addition to 20?

In our English learning, we have been learning a new model text called "The Giraffe and the Elephant". It is a story that is about a giraffe and an elephant falling out. We used puppets to retell the story! I have attached the model text and the story map below. Can you tell your grown-up about why the animals fell out? How did they fix the problem? Was it a happy ending? You could even have a go at drawing the story map yourself!
In our Topic learning, we have creating our own climate maps of Kenya by using natural resources. We used sand for the desert areas, hay for the savanna areas, and grass for the grassland areas. We used atlases to help us identify which areas were on which side of the country. The children loved it! You can find pictures below!
We also did some brochures to tell people all about Kenya. We looked at the landmarks of Kenya and we found out that Kenya has not had many tourists because of the pandemic, so we were encouraging people to go and see Kenya. The children did some fantastic group work and created lovely brochures which are stuck around the classroom. Here is one of the brochures that we did below. Can you tell your grown up any facts about Kenya? Can you convince them to go to Kenya!?
This week, I awarded a SUCCESS certificate and a leaf. Well done to those who received an award.
Unfortunately, Mr Armishaw will not be in school for the next two weeks as he will be on jury duty. If you do need to speak to him, please email him, or speak to one of our fantastic team members. I hope the children get on OK during the next two weeks.
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
Mr Armishaw and the Year 1 team.
