WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

W/c 8/06/2021

What an exciting first week of the last half term we have had in Puffins.  It has involved, money, protractors, Bio blitzing and Blue Peter badges.

In English this week we have been working on various aspects of grammar. We have identified the subject, verb and object in sentences, demarcated sentences with the appropriate punctuation and practiced our proofreading skills. In addition to this, we finished our incredible Earth destruction artwork and wrote our cinquain poems in neat over this to be displayed on our class writing wall.

Within Maths this week:

Year 4 children have been working with money. We started by looking at pounds and pence and then progressed to ordering, estimating and comparing different amounts of money. Today, children acted as customers and shop assistants to apply their skills and extend their learning.

Year 5 have begun looking at angles and how to measure using protractors.  We have reminded ourselves about acute, obtuse, reflex and right angles and learnt some new techniques for making sure we accurately measure angles using a protractor.

This week we had a very exciting Scientific experience.  Nicola, who works for the Trent Waterways Association, came into school to teach us about Bio blitzing.  She told us all about the Scientific ideas behind Bio blitzing and why it is important for Scientists to know about different species in different areas.  We then had a go at filling in our own Wildlife Recording Table.  We learnt all about how to fill in this table so that we could record all of our information accurately.  We were all very surprised at how many different species of both wildlife and plants there were just on our school field.  We made sure we disturbed all the wildlife as little as possible.  We were especially fascinated to discover a Ladybird larva which looks nothing like a adult Ladybird.

Our spellings this week are:

Year 4: ‘super’, ‘anti’ and ‘auto’ prefixes– supermarket, superman, superstar, superhuman, antiseptic, anticlockwise, antisocial, autobiography, autograph, automatic.

Year 5: Homophones – affect, effect, procede, proceed, draft, draught, dessert, desert, whose, who’s.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Stay safe,

The Puffins Team
