Week 10

This week we have continued learning about Africa and specifically African animals.  We learned what animals lived in Africa and focussed on the patterns on their skin or fur.  The children looked really closely and painted the patterns too.  We also learned about camouflage and how the animals use camouflage to protect themselves from predators.

We also learned that some animals are hunted for their fur, tusks, claws or teeth and why.  The children agreed that this was unfair and cruel and should be stopped!

We listened to African music and identified the instruments in the music.  We watched an African tribal rain dance and had great fun joining in with the dance and moving to the beat of the drums!

We continued our learning about the story of Handa’s Surprise this week, by writing a letter to letter to tell her what had happened to the fruit in her basket.  The children did really well to independently sound out the words and write them into a sentence.

In maths the children explored money.  We talked about what money is for and how we use it to buy things.  We talked about the other ways that we can pay for things in a shop or online and looked at pictures of people paying with a phone, card or watch as well as cash.  The children showed very good understanding of this.  We sorted all the UK coins by looking closely at their features such as colour, shape, patterns and numerals.  We then played a game to help us recognise 1p, 2p and 5p coins which also consolidated our understanding of 10, by spinning a money spinner, selecting the value of the coin, using counters, and placing the counters on our 10 frame.  We looked at how many more we needed to fill our frame, (practising number bonds to 10) and knew that if we had 7 we needed 3p more to win.  We understood that as there were no 3p coins, we would need a 2p and a 1p coin or three 1p coins.

In PSHE we learned about the dangers of crossing the road and how to cross the road safely. We set up a ‘road’ on the playground using the zebra crossing mat and cones and lollypop stick.  Some children rode bikes and we learned how to stop, look and listen (The Green Cross Code!)

Of course, the highlight of our week was our trip to Twycross Zoo!  We had an absolutely fantastic day and were so lucky with the weather.  A huge thank you to the parent helpers who came along.  Please see the photos of our day here:

Please continue to read regularly with your child at home.  It really is making a great difference.  Don’t forget you can also access extra online reading books on Bug Club.

Spelling Shed

Please support your child to practise sounding out and spelling their words on the Spelling Shed app. It helps them to use and apply the sounds they have learned recently in phonics.  This week we are practising words containing the “or” digraph.  The children score points every time they practise their spellings on spelling shed and each class competes against each other for fun.  The top three scoring classes are read out in assembly each week.  Let’s see if our Robins can get onto the leader board next week.

Maths Shed

The children can also access Maths Shed through the same site as Spelling Shed.  They have new ‘assignments’ which are games that explore numbers to 10, so please have a play!

Have a great weekend!
