ReptonPrimary School

Week 3

This week we have been learning about Chinese New Year.  We listened to the story about how the animals were chosen to create the Chinese zodiac of 12 animals and retold this story in our writing.  The children are getting much better at sounding out their words and forming their letters to create their sentences.  Some children are becoming much more independent with their writing too which is all lovely to see! We also acted out the story which was great fun!  We also learned that this year is the year of the rat.  We also found out that some of the children were born in the year of the horse and some were born in the year of the goat.

In maths we have been counting coins to put in the special Chinese "Hong Bao" envelopes.  We have added two sets of coins together to find the total amount.

We have also learned how the Chinese community prepare for and celebrate Chinese New Year.  We learned that the colour red means "good luck" so that is why so many things are coloured red.  We made and decorated Chinese lanterns which look lovely. The children took a lot of time and effort to decorate them.  They are now displayed in our classroom.

We also looked at some Chinese writing and learned that they use different symbols to our letters and numbers.  We also noted that Chinese writing goes downwards, rather than across like ours.  The children practiced writing Chinese symbols.

We have also role played using red rice and made a takeaway using real noodles, chopsticks and takeaway containers.

We also watched some Chinese Dragon dances on the screen and then recreated this in our PE session.  We noted that the drum beat was very important to set the changing pace of the dance.  We practiced moving in the style of a Chinese Dragon and created our own Chinese dragon dance which we performed to each other.  It was a lot of fun!

In music this week, we practiced keeping the pulse to the song "5 Little Monkey's".  We did this in lots of different ways such as tapping different parts of our body, jumping, stepping and waving.  We then used the instruments to keep the pulse whilst we sang.  It was very noisy but also lots of fun!

Next week we will be learning about how pizzas are made. We will be chopping up ingredients and creating our own pizzas.
