WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

W/C 22.04.24

We have had another lovely and busy week in the Owls Class!

In maths, we learned about non-unit fractions. A non-unit fraction is a fraction with a numerator (top number) greater than 1. Can you solve this problem using your knowledge of non-unit fractions?

We have also learned about equivalent fractions by finding one-half and two-quarters of an amount. Show someone what you can do:

Later in the week, we were finding three-quarters of an amount. Can you remember how to do this?

In English, we innovated (changed) part of our warning tale. We decided on a new character, where the story was set and what they have been warned about. Can you tell someone at home about your ideas? We then planned our own warning tales ready for our 'hot writes' next week! What is going to happen in your story? Who is your main character? What are they warned about? Why do they do what they have been told not to do? What will happen?

This week, we have also been learning how to use speech within our writing. A lot of the children are becoming very ambitious with their writing and have asked to include it. Therefore, we had a lesson on how to begin to use it correctly within our writing. Can you show someone at home how we can include speech within our writing? Remember to use the helpful hints below...

This term, the end of every week, we spend time looking at different elements of our Year 2 writing (e.g. different punctuation, expanded noun phrases, conjunctions, past and present tense). We then put this into practice by writing a short piece of writing. We are having lots of fun with this so far and have been enjoying writing and sharing our ideas with each other! They are a very creative and imaginative bunch!

In science, we have been learning all about how animals are suited to their environment. We looked at camels, polar bears and giraffes. Can you tell someone at home some of the features a camel has to help them survive in the desert (e.g. eyelashes, feet, hump, eyebrows, colour)? Can you tell someone about polar bears and how they survive in their very cold climate (e.g. fur, blubber, claws, colour, nostrils)? We then completed a 'Blubber Glove' experiment. We each put our hands in ice-cold water for 20 seconds (if we could last that long!). We then put our hands in the ice water with our blubber glove on and recorded the difference in how cold our hands felt. Which one kept us warmer? How does the blubber glove work?

We then looked at food chains. Using the pictures below, can you make a 'food chain'? Remember, the arrow means 'eaten by'!
