On Wednesday I had the pleasure of joining our Year 3 and 4 children on their Anglo-Saxon topic trip to Tamworth Castle. As always, their behaviour was perfect and they represented us proudly See Y3 class pages for more upcoming pictures from the day. Thank you to the volunteers that supported us.

    Tue 24 Oct 2023 S Tague

On Monday 23rd October our classes from Year 1 to Year 6 made their way to St Wystan's Church for our annual gathering to celebrate harvest festival. Each class sang their own song and the whole school sang two songs together. Our Year 6 children did readings about harvest time. There was a massive attendance from our parents and grandparents so thank you to them for joining us and making it such a special event. Thank you also to Stephen, at the church, for helping Miss Hobbs set up the sounds and music. Thank you also to Miss Hobbs for organising the event and the volunteers that helped walk our children to church.

  • Y6 Poppy Appeal at Repton RBL

    Tue 24 Oct 2023 S Tague

On Monday 23rd October I had the privilege of taking some Year 6s on our annual visit to the Repton British Legion to prepare for this year's poppy appeal. Our local branch is responsible for distributing tens of thousands of poppies and merchandise for a lot of South Derbyshire. The first job is to make the boxes for the poppies and then fill them with thousands of poppies for this year's campaign. Our Y6 house captains and school councillors then filled other boxes with poppies, wristbands and other merchandise for shops and schools in South Derbyshire. Their final job was to ensure all the 'tins' for donations were going to the correct places. This is always an enjoyable and worth while job that the children really enjoy. As always, they behaved perfectly throughout the session. Thank you to Zandra and her daughter Natalie for inviting us again this year.

    Sun 22 Oct 2023

On Thursday our Year 2 children received some vital and enjoyable first aid training. The children enjoyed learning these new skills which could one day be used to save or help someone. Well done to our Owls for engaging so well with the training and behaving so well.

  • Dexter the dog (and friend) visit Y2!

    Fri 13 Oct 2023 S Tague

Today our Y2 Owls welcomed a very special guest. Dexter the (retired) fire dog and his owner, Dave, came in to talk about the role of fire dogs and fire safety. Although Dexter and Dave have now retired the duo spend some of their time visiting schools and sharing these important messages. Dave also talked about how fire dogs are used to detect the smell of petrol after a fire to investigate whether it might have been started deliberately. As an added bonus, Dave then introduced Ginny, a spritely spaniel, who is only 17 months old! The Owls loved stroking the dogs and having this special visit. Well done to our children for their fantastic behaviour.

  • Kenyan link and Vikings!

    Thu 12 Oct 2023 S Tague

Yesterday our Year 6 House Captains linked up with our partner schools in the UK and Kenya to share with everyone their amazing Viking day this week. They were able to share facts about Saxons and Vikings in our very own village. It was great for them to present this live, via Teams, to children in classrooms from Chaddesden to Castle Donington and Kenya! Well done to our Captains.

  • Vikings in Repton - Part 2

    Tue 10 Oct 2023 S Tague

Today our Year 6 children took part in an immersive day of art, history and writing centred around the Vikings in Repton. The collaboration involved children from RPS, St Wystan's and key personalities within the village involved with history including the former head of Art at Repton School. One of the highlights was having the opportunity to meet famous author, Tony Bradman, on a Zoom call (he was supposed to be with us in person but was unfortunately too unwell to travel). Children had the opportunity to ask Tony questions and hear what inspired him to write so many children's books including 'Viking Boy'. He also passed on some great tips for writing an exciting story! Our children were also give a tour of the school and church site where the Vikings has settled in 873AD and where Saxon graves had recently been dug up. Our children also had a fun art session creating Viking shields using ink and bamboo sticks. The day finished with some writing in the crypt and church around setting descriptions. It was an amazing day, the children learned lots and behaved impeccably. Well done!

This session was intended to set the tone for their immersive Viking day the following day at Repton School. Images from this will follow.
