WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week 2

This week we have been learning all about Chinese New Year. We learned who celebrates CNY and how they prepare for it.  We learned about Dragon Dances and listened to and made Chinese music to go with the dances.

In PE we performed out own Dragon Dance along with the beat of a drum.  We covered ourselves in a long sheet and walked in a long line together just like the dancers.

We learned that red is an important lucky colour at CNY and made our own Chinese lanterns, decorated with Chinese symbols and gold glitter. They look great.

We also listened to the story of The Great Race and know that it is this story that explains why each year is named after an animal.  2023 is the year of the rabbit. We made our own dragon puppets, decorated lion and dragon heads and made ung pow envelopes, which the Chinese give as gifts at CNY with money inside.

We wrote about the story of The Great Race in our books; choosing a few sentences to write about our favourite parts.

This week in maths we added two amounts together. The children counted how many counters in each set, then combined the amounts to find the total. We practised subitising the small amounts in each set and we also practised counting on from the first number.  For example if there were 5 red counters and 3 yellow counters, we practised counting on from 5.  “5 …..6,7,8.” We then put the counters into a 10 frame to check the amount. Super work

In PSHE we discussed why it is important to keep our teeth clean.  We talked about what foods are not good for our teeth: sugary foods such as chocolate and sweets, fizzy drinks and juice in bottles.

We then talked about what food and drinks are good for our teeth such as fruits, vegetables, pasta and milk and water.  We discussed teeth brushing and demonstrated putting toothpaste on a brush and brushing for 2 minutes

In Monster Phonics this week we learned the ‘ow’ sound (as in now).  We met Brown Owl and know that she makes this ‘ow’ sound.  We learned the trickey words, ‘look, now and down’.

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week.
