WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week 8

This week we have learned about what changes happen in Autumn.  We talked about the leaves on the trees and how they change colour in the Autumn and then fall, as the sun is further away.  We looked at pictures of the beautiful colours of the leaves and compared them with the leaves in summer.  We read the story ‘Owl Babies’ and talked about how the baby owls felt at night when their mother went to find them food.  We learned that the days become shorter in Autumn and we talked about how the clocks were going to go back at the weekend.  We also talked about animals that hibernate and how geese fly to warmer places for the winter and that this is called migration.  The children were able to share the facts they had learned for our learning wall display.

We made such cute owl babies for our autumn display using pine cones.  We used our fine motor skills to cut out wings and eyes.  We stuck lots of feather on them and they look brilliant!

In English this week we thought about clothes that we need for the Autumn.  The weather has turned colder so we knew that we need coats, hats, gloves, scarves and warm clothes.  The children sorted cold weather clothes from warm weather clothes in a simple venn diagram. We then wrote a list of the clothes we need in autumn.  The children tried to sound out the words and write down the sounds they could hear, using a sound mat to help when necessary.

In Squiggle and handwriting we have practised the letter ‘o’  So far, the children have learned the correct formation of ‘c, a and o’.

We explored 1, 2 and 3 this week.  We practised subitising those amounts and played a game where we looked to find who had the same number of spots as us on our card.  We then sorted different representations of 1,2 and 3 into groups and matched them to their numerals.  We also went on a hunt where we collected 1, 2 and 3 objects and put them with their numerals.  We dropped lots of counters onto a large piece of paper and looked to notice the amounts that we could subitise.  We drew around ones, twos and threes.

In our PE session we played Parachute.  We worked as a team and played lots of fun games!

In Monster Phonics this week we learned the sounds f, ff, l, ll and ss.  We learned that a digraph is 2 letters that made one sound.  (ff, ss, ll).

Please see the video in the Monster Phonics section of our web page to see the actions for these sounds and practise those from the start to f.  Most children are now able to hear the initial sound in a word and many can segment a cvc word into its 3 sounds, eg: ‘m – a – n…..man’.   We have also sent home the next set of high frequency words (below) for the children to learn at home along with their reading books.

Have a lovely half term break!  The children have worked so hard this term.  Well done! (to you parents too!)
