WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week 5

This week we learned all about our environment by answering the question, “How can we help our environment?”  We read the story ‘Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish’ about a man that ruined the earth by building factories everywhere. The children wrote a letter to the man, asking him not to ruin the earth by writing sentences, such as ‘please do not cut down the trees, the animals will die, it will be smelly and dirty’, etc.

During topic time, we looked at photos of beautiful scenery in our country, such as hills, trees, lakes and landscapes then contrasted them with photos of unkempt areas, with litter, factories and pollution. We talked about what we noticed and what we preferred and discussed how we can make our environment better, by picking up litter, using renewable energy We explored recycling different materials into categories and learned that recycling means less waste being left in our world.

We made bird feeders to look after the wildlife in our playground and forest area. We were also so pleased to see that our caterpillars have hatched into butterflies 🦋. We have so many. We released them into our forest area.

We had a great move-up day on Tuesday and loved our time in Hedgehogs Class with Mr Armishaw. We all made hedgehogs and enjoyed a day getting to know our new classroom. All the children came out really happy and excited and show they are so ready to be in year 1!

In maths, we found the total of two numbers by using manipulatives of our choice, such as 10 frames, counters or numicon. We selected two number number cards then worked out the total, by ‘proving it’ to each other using our chosen method of calculation. We then wrote our number sentences down.

In Monster Phonics this week, we have been practising reading and writing ccvcc words with previously taught digraphs.  We also learned 3 new tricky words: their and outPlease continue to read with your child regularly.  It really makes a difference to their confidence and fluency. Please also continue to use spelling shed.  Again, this really helps the children to develop confidence and fluency with their segmenting and spelling skills.

Of course, the highlight of our week was the visit to Twycross Zoo! We had a fantastic time! A huge thank you to the parent helpers that came along; we couldn’t have had our trip without you. You will be able to find the photos of our day on our main class page.

Have a lovely weekend!
