WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Updates W.C 24.06.24

We have had a great week in our learning this week! I can't believe that the children only have three weeks left until they go into Year 2! I know that the children are excited for their transition day on Tuesday with Mrs Taylor-Day.

We have made full use of this lovely sunshine this week, and so we have tried to go outside as much as possible this week! Look below to find out what learning we have been doing this week.

Maths

In our Maths learning, we have finished off our work on mass and weight. On Monday, we looked at the word capacity means. We learned that capacity is how much a container can hold. We used cups of water to measure the capacities of different containers. We made sure that all the cups we used were full to make sure it was a fair experiment.

We then started our new unit of Time this week. The children have been learning loads of new vocabulary all to do with time. On Tuesday, we learned the words 'before' and 'after' to sequence events, as well as using 'first', 'then', 'now'. On Wednesday, we learned the days of the week and how we can use 'yesterday', 'today' and 'tomorrow' to describe when things may happen. We learned that there were 7 days in a week, and that there are 52 weeks in a year. On Thursday, we learned the months of the year. We listened to a very catchy song to help us remember the months of the year, which I have included below. We learned a technique, using our knuckles, to help us remember how many days each month has. Can you tell your grown-up the months of the year in order? Can you remember which months have 31 days, 30 days, and the month that has 28/29 days?

English

In our English learning, we have started a new text, a journey tale. We have been learning the story of "The Stickman" by Julia Donaldson. We learned this first by creating a story map using the Mighty Writer (which you can see below). We then created the story by doing a spot of acting! We went outside with some sticks and created a few of the scenes using props and other items that we could find in and around our classroom. We then also looked at features of the model text too. Have a look at our story map, and our model text? Can you tell your grown-up about the story? Can you talk it through?

Here is also one of our group's acting out the main parts of the Stickman. The children decided on what they wanted to do for each scene, and they took the photos themselves using skills they had learnt from their

Computing lessons!

Science

In our Science learning, the children have continued their work on plants. On Monday, we were comparing how plants can be different or similar to one another. We then looked at how trees are a type of plant. We did a bit of a game to help remember the different parts of the tree, and then we went onto our school field to look at trees and make some observational drawings of tree. We looked at features such as the bark, trunk, roots, leaves, branches, twigs and the crown. Here are some photos of us looking at trees.

We also looked at what a deciduous tree was, and what an evergreen tree was. We found trees in our local area that matched these two types of trees. Can you tell your grown up what an evergreen tree is? What is a deciduous tree? How do you know just by looking at the leaves?

Computing

We also went and had an explore in the forest school, but not for trees, but for minibeasts! The children learned about how we can collect data and put it into a grid. We learned how to use tally marks and we went off in the forest school to collect data on which minibeast was the most common. We then came back to the classroom and we turned some of the data into graphs!

Phonics

In our Phonics this week, we have been revising the y, ph, wh, e graphemes. Please use the time to read sheets to practise any sounds that your child may struggle with.

Spellings - also available on Spelling Shed.
