WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week beginning 04.09.23

Our Learning

I hope the Seals have enjoyed their first week in Year 6! It has been lovely welcoming the children back to school and hearing all about their summer holidays. We have a very important, yet hopefully fun and exciting, year ahead and we have already been super busy! So busy, in fact, that we haven't had time to capture all of the fantastic things we have been doing in the classroom!

English –

At the beginning of the week, the children showed off their creative writing skills, planning and writing their own narrative. There were some interesting storylines and I look forward to seeing their writing develop throughout the year. For the rest of the week, we have been working on various aspects of grammar. This has included recapping word classes, proof-reading, editing and improving a piece of work, and using relative clauses in sentences.

Maths –

At the start of the week, we tested our existing Maths skills by completing arithmetic questions and solving a 'Fractangles' challenge. We then moved on to our first Maths unit of the year, which is place value. So far this has included exploring numbers up to 10,000,000!

History –

This week, we introduced the children to our history topic, which is all about Ancient Egypt! To start off with, the children showed off any existing knowledge they might have and thought of some questions that they would like to find the answer to over the course of our history unit. We then spent a lesson looking at historical evidence and how this tells us about the past. The children had to analyse artefacts, thinking about what they could be/mean and how it might relate to the Ancient Egyptians. The children had some fantastic ideas and even went as far as to consider why our ideas of the past may not always be reliable. During our second history lesson this week, we looked at the chronology of Ancient Egypt. Children were tasked with creating a historical timeline, researching and placing key events from the Ancient Egyptian period in chronological order on their timeline.

No homework or spellings have been handed out this week. These will be given to the children on Monday.
