WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Autumn Term 2 - Updates

What a fantastic first week back in the Hedgehogs' class this week. The children have had some challenging and difficult learning this week but they have really impressed me with their determination and their efforts so well done Hedgehogs! Look below to see what we have been learning about this week.

Maths

In our Maths learning, we have been learning about addition and how we can create addition facts from a picture problem. With the picture to the right, we can say that there are 3 green cubes and yellow cube. Therefore, there are 4 altogether.

So 3 + 1 = 4

We learnt we can swap the parts around, and look at it in a different way such as;

1 + 3 = 4.

In a number sentence, the whole can occasionally come at the left side of the number sentence. If we imagine it like scales, the 4 is the same as 3 + 1 so we can put the answer on either side of the sum. Look at the example below!

Can you write 4 addition facts for these picture problems below? Use the template below to help you!

English

In our English learning, we have changed the instructions on how to mummify a pharaoh. We innovated these instructions by creating instructions on how to fight an Egyptian serpent! We learnt that when an Egyptian is mummified and their soul goes into the afterlife, they encounter several challenges and one of the things they may see is an Egyptian serpent. We collectively thought about what we might need to defeat this serpent and planned a mini-story map. Then we wrote a piece of writing by gathering ideas from our pairs. The children produced some fantastic writing! Can you tell your grown-up how you would fight an Egyptian serpent? Can you use first, next, then, after that, and finally in your instructions?

Topic

We are back to doing our fantastic Egyptian learning and we kick-started this term by learning about hieroglyphics. We learnt about what they are and why they were used. We then looked at the symbols and had a go at spelling our names in hieroglyphics! We then looked at some Ancient Egyptian buildings and temples to see what colours the Ancient Egyptians used to decorate. Can you tell your grown-up what colours the Ancient Egyptians used in their paintings? We then looked at how most of the hieroglyphics were carved into walls, written on chalkboards, or were written on papyrus. We learnt that papyrus is a thick material that is made from a plant. We painted our names onto papyrus paper in hieroglyphics and they turned out really well! We used cotton buds to do it as they were more easier to use than the paint brushes! See the pictures below! Can you use the hieroglyphic word mat to write a secret message to your grown-up?

Spellings (to learn for 10.11.22)

We have begun practicing our Christmas production and both Mrs Taylor-Day and I are very impressed with the singing and acting so far. We hope you are excited about it too. If you have any questions about costumes or the nativity itself, please do not hesitate to get in contact with one of us.

Have a lovely weekend!
