We have had another wonderful week in Foxes class! It has involved maps, book reviews and a Monkey King! Read on to find out more

In English this week we have been reading the story ‘Kai and the Monkey King’ by Joe Todd-Stanton. We started off by creating a character card for the Monkey King, including adjectives to describe him and his character. We then looked in depth at the main character, Kai, and used relative clauses to describe her and her actions in the first part of the story. We also had a go at including relative clauses in a diary entry from the point of view of Kai’s mum, Wen. The children had to think carefully about Wen’s thoughts and feelings and how she might express these in her diary entry. Following this, we wrote a short letter from Kai to her mum explaining where she was going and why. The children had a challenge to try and include an example of the passive voice in their writing. Finally, we looked at improving simple sentences by adding fronted adverbials and noun phrases. The children then used these ideas to create their own comic strips to summarise the story so far.

In Maths this week, Year 6 have finished their ratio unit and began their algebra unit. This has included solving proportion problems, solving problems involving ingredients for recipes, exploring function machines and forming expressions.

The Year 5s have finished their fractions unit of work this week. This has involved subtracting mixed numbers and breaking the whole. Year 5 will move onto multiplication and division next week. 

Topic this week has involved us learning more about China, our brand new Geography topic, and its physical features. The start of the week saw us developing our knowledge on latitude and longitude. We discovered the most famous of these lines, how they affect different countries and how they help us find where countries and features in the world are. In our second lesson of the week we found out about the rivers that were in China, the mountains and also the cities. We labelled a map with these geographical details. We also used atlases to research some more details about these features and write an informative paragraph.

Homework –

Children have been given a piece of Maths and English homework this week which relates to the learning we have been doing in school. The tasks have been explained in school, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to find me. Homework is due on Tuesday 20th January 2026.
