WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week 6

This week we have asked the question, ‘how do we celebrate special times?’  We learned all about different times that we celebrate, such as birthdays, Christmas, weddings, Easter, Bonfire Night, etc.

We prepared during the week for a party for Robbie the Robin.  We made party chains, streamers, party hats, decorated balloons, iced cakes and made jelly.  Then on Friday we had a party for Robbie.  We played party games, danced, sang Happy Birthday to Robbie and enjoyed cake and jelly.

We made jelly for our party.  We noticed how the jelly cubes dissolved in warm water.  Everyone had a stir and we could smell the flavours of the jelly – orange and strawberry.

In English we wrote a list of party food.  The children selected a picture of food, stuck it in their writing book then wrote the sounds they could hear in the word.  Most children could hear the initial sounds and some children could hear middle and end sounds too.  We used a sound board to help us write the sounds in our books.

In maths we learned about measures.  We talked about measure; through, size, capacity and mass.  We used the language to compare such as ‘small, tall, short, long, full and empty and heavy and light’.  We explored size by sorting the sizes of plates and cups to match the 3 bears at picnic time.  We explored how much different containers held in the sand tray, by counting the numbers of spoonfuls of sand to fill each one.  We compared the mass of different objects on balance scales and used lots of language to talk about what we estimated and noticed.

In Monster Phonics this week we learned the sounds e u r.  The children are practising recognising these sounds along with the others that we have learned so far. We also practised building simple cvc words and reading them by breaking them down into their single phonemes like robots.  We have sent home the next set of tricky words for the children to learn.  Please try and keep these in their reading diaries.  More will be sent home during the year.

Please see the video in the Monster Phonics section of our class page to see the actions for these sounds and practise those from the start to r.

Have a lovely weekend!
