Another fantastic week in Foxes class! We have been doing lots of writing recently and I’ve been really impressed with the children’s progress – it’s not even the end of September yet!
In Maths this week, Year 4 have been ordering and comparing numbers to 10,000 and at the end of the week, we learnt about Roman Numerals! Can you tell your grown-up which number CXXXVIII is?!
The Year 5s have been comparing and ordering numbers to 100,000 as well as rounding up to the nearest 100,000. We are working with some much bigger numbers this year, but the children have been working really hard to try and grasp this concept.
In English we have been studying ‘The Rain Player’ in even more detail. We have written a setting description as well as an action scene between Chac and Pik. Our week ended with us planning our own Maya folk tale. We thought about the different issues that our Maya village could have had, what Gods could be linked to this problem and what challenges they may have to overcome to defeat the God. Next week will write our own Maya folk tale.
In History this week, we learnt about the various parts of a Maya city, how they were built and what they were used for. We discovered that they had: temples, palaces, markets and pok-ta-pok playing courts! From this information we created leaflets describing the importance of these different buildings to the Maya culture.
In Art, we are learning about architecture. The children have had a go at using printing tools this week to create an abstract print based on a house drawing they did in the previous lesson. We also had a go at being architects by designing our own buildings. These ranged from houses to mansions, hotels to sky scrapers and cafes to theme park buildings! The children really let their imaginations run wild, while still sticking to the architectural brief.
Next week we will carry on with our Science investigations which will see us carry out our thermally efficient experiments. I wonder which materials will be the most thermally efficient?!
Have a wonderful weekend!
