We have had a fantastic week in the Hedgehogs class this week! Look below to see what we have been up to this week.
Maths
In our Maths learning this week, we have been learning all about how we can compare numbers. We learned that we can compare objects and numbers using words such as fewer and more. We also learned about one of Mr Armishaw's favourite mathematical symbols - the crocodiles! These are symbols that we use to compare two numbers. The crocodiles that we learned about are below, and there are examples of how they are used;
The children had a go at comparing numbers using crocodiles in Friday's lesson. Here are some pictures below.
English
In our English learning this week, the children were tasked with writing their first ever HOT WRITE. A HOT WRITE is a piece of writing where the children have created their own plans for a piece of writing. They children typically write independently, but in Year 1 we do provide verbal support and help children create sentences. The sounding, finger spaces, capital letters and word choices are the children's own work. The children all worked hard to create their stories that were based off of Zog. The work can be found in our Hedgehog bay! Can you remember what your story was about? What sentence starters did you use? Did you sue any adjectives?
History
In our History learning this week we continued our work by looking at jobs in Repton in the past 100 years. We looked at a diary entry from a woman who lived in Repton. She described the different jobs that were in the area. We acted out some of these roles in class. Here are some of the jobs that we looked at below. Can you match the words to the pictures?
We also looked at jobs today of people that help us. We looked at how technology and electricity has changed a lot of jobs today. We looked at the devices that the police have today and what police had to use in the past. We thought it was very hard to be a policeman back in the day! Next week, we are going to practice doing some fingerprinting as the police started doing this method 100 years ago!
Computing
We continued our work on Sketchpad and looking at how we can create shapes within shapes. We practiced overlapping and making different shapes different colours (similar to our Kandinsky work in art last week!)
Art
In our Art learning, we practiced drawing from observations. The children had pumpkins, pineapples and pomegranates on their tables. They were tasked with carefully using their eyes to draw their objects and then make marks to show the different features of the object. We have some very good artists in the class!
Phonics
This week, the children have learned about plurals. The children learned that a plural is when there is more than one noun. We add +s to most nouns, but sometimes we add +es when the noun ends in a zz, ss, sh, ch or x. We also started learning our first split digraph this week a-e. The children have done such a great job with learning this split digraph. If you want a challenge, there are some split a-e words below to have a go at reading! Can you match the words to the picture?

Have a lovely weekend!
