We have had a fantastic first full week in the Hedgehogs class! The children have worked so hard in all their learning and I am very proud of how well they have settled into the Year 1 routine. Look below to find out what we have been doing in some of our subjects this week.
Maths
In our Maths learning, we have been learning about how we can sort and count objects. We realised that we can sort objects into groups based on their properties (e.g. shape, size, colour, type). We then practised counting objects and counting a specific amount of objects from a large group. Here are some pictures of the Hedgehogs sorting some objects they picked out.
Challenges
Mr Armishaw wants to know how many different ways can you sort these houses into two groups, or even three groups? If you can write your answers on a piece of paper and bring them in, you can get 10 house points!
There are also Maths Shed games for the lessons that we have done this week that you an find here; https://play.edshed.com/en-gb
English
In our English learning, we have been learning the story of Zog. We got engaged with our text by looking at Mr Armishaw's picture of dragon in his garden! We then watched the animated story of Zog and talked about the main parts of the story. We then used our 'Mighty Writer' story map creator to create the story map. In Year 1, rather than drawing story maps, the children create the story map by attaching pictures to a velcro mat. Then we talked through the story and talked about some of the key vocabulary in the text.
Here is the story map and the model text that we are using. Can you look at the Mighty Writer text and see if you can tell your grown-up some of the story of Zog?
We also learned about some key VIP words from our text and we created sentences using these words.
Can you tell your grown up a sentence from the story using these fantastic words?
Topic - History
This term, we are learning about History and in Year 1 we are learning about the past 100 years. We started off by learning about what a timeline is and we created timelines of our lives. We then learned that 100 years is called a century and we wanted to know how long 100 years ago is - so we used toilet roll to show how long 100 years is, in comparison to a 5 year old's history!
We then looked at some photographs of the lives of chukdren who lived 100 years ago and we looked at what sort of things they did for fun. We found out that they didn't have TVs, electronics, plastic toys and other games that we have today, as they had not been invented back then! Can you remember what sorts of games/toys that children played with 100 years ago?
Phonics
In our Phonics this week, we have been looking at the ff, ss, ll, zz, ck and nk graphemes.
Spellings
These are the first set of spellings that the children have been allocated. Spellings will normally be based on the phonics that we have learned this week, but this may not always be the case. The spellings are also available on Spelling Shed as well, alongside other practice games as well.
Have a lovely weekend and well done Hedgehogs!
