We have had a very busy week in hedgehogs class this week! The children have been working really hard in their HOT WRITES, we have been doing some tricky subtraction work, and we are doing plenty of Christmas production practises (which I am sure they are getting tired of!). They have had an amazing week, so look below to find out what we have been doing.
Maths
In our Maths learning, we have been learning about how we can subtract using different methods. We learnt that we can subtract using different methods. We learnt about the crossing off method and how we can use that to help solve subtractions. We learnt that the first number in the subtraction number sentence is how many counter/circles we need. The second number is the number to cross off. The answer is how many are left remaining. Have a look at these subtractions below. Can you work out what subtraction number sentence is being shown?
We also learnt about how we can check subtractions by using a number line. When solving a subtraction number sentence, we start from the 1st number of our number sentence, we 'jump' backwards the number of jumps from what we are subtracting to work out the answer. Here are some below if you want to have a go at some yourself!
English
In our English work this week, we have finished off our work on non-chronological reports by writing our own report on a favourite animal, person or event. The children were tasked with creating an introduction, a set of questions using question marks, and answering those questions in sentences. The children produced amazing pieces of writing, which you can find in our Hedgehog bay! Could you help Mr Armishaw come up with an introduction and some sentences for his report? Here is his plan!
History
In our History learning this week, we have been learning about beliefs and how things have changed over the past 100 years. We looked at how life for women has changed in the past 100 years and how it wasn't equal for women back then. We talked about suffragettes and how they helped fought for the rights of woman. We talked about what women can do today and how it is better than how it was in the past. Can you explain to a grown-up why it wasn't fair for women 100 years ago? What could they not do, that men could do?
We also talked about how beliefs on race have changed in the past 100 years. We talked about how in America 60-70 years ago, America was a place of segregation and racism. We talked about those words and what happened to Rosa Parks on the bus. We acted out the story sensitively and the children felt really sorry for Rosa and other people who experienced being segregated. There are lots of interactive games on Rosa Parks and her life, which you can find below (an example of the game is like the picture to the left)

Phonics
In our Phonics this week, we have focused on the suffixes 'er' and 'est' which can be addest to the end of adjectives. We also looked at the digraph oe this week.
Spellings
This week's spellings for most of the children are based on common exception words (CEW). These are words that are tricky to spell, but have a common spelling pattern and are common words used in Year 1. Please spend time practising these words this week. We went through the spelling of these words on Friday.
Christmas Production
A reminder has already gone out about Christmas nativity costumes already. Please can we have them in on Monday 2nd December so we can practise on Wednesday in our costumes. Thank you to those who have already brought theirs in.
We also have been given a date for KS1 to go and visit the Repton 400 Hall to do a mini practise before the dress rehearsal. The data of that is Friday 6th December. If you are free to come to that, please could you email me.
We have sent a Parenthubt with a lot of dates coming up in December. It is a very busy time and we can appreciate if it all seems a bit confusing and overwhelming. If you can help out on any of those dates, please could you email me. We would really appreciate it.
Hope you have a lovely weekend Hedgehogs!
Mr Armishaw
