Welcome back!
This week we have learned about what changes happen in Autumn. We talked about the leaves on the trees and how they change colour in the Autumn and then fall, as the sun is further away. We looked at pictures of the beautiful colours of the leaves and compared them with the leaves in summer. We read the story ‘Owl Babies’ and talked about how the baby owls felt at night when their mother went to find them food. We learned that the days become shorter in Autumn and talked about which clothes are safer to wear to be see at night. We explored shining a torch onto a hi-vis vest to see how light reflected in the dark. We also talked about animals that hibernate and how geese fly to warmer places for the winter and that this is called migration. The children were able to share the facts they had learned for our learning wall display. We also talked about celebrations that happen in autumn such as Bonfire Night and Halloween. We also talked about Remembrance Day and why people wear poppies at this time of year.
We made such cute owl babies for our autumn display using natural object from outdoors such as leaves, sticks, feathers, etc. We gave them googly eyes too and they look so cute!
In English this week we thought about clothes that we need for the Autumn. The weather has turned colder so we knew that we need coats, hats, gloves, scarves and warm clothes. The children sorted cold weather clothes from warm weather clothes in a simple venn diagram. We then wrote a list of the clothes we need in autumn. The children tried to sound out the words and write down the sounds they could hear, using a sound mat to help when necessary.
In Squiggle and handwriting we have practised the letters ‘a and d’
We explored the composition of 1, 2 and 3 this week. We dropped 3 counters with red on one side, and yellow on the other, onto a piece of paper. We noticed the different ways the counters could fall such as 1 red and 2 yellow, 2 red and 1 yellow or 3 of the same colour. We then hid 3 pebbles in a cup and the teacher took out some. The children used their cardinal knowledge of 3 to say how many were left under the cup. We then enjoyed a bean bag game, where each person had 3 beanbags, threw them into a hoop and noticed how many were in and out of the hoop. Eg, 2 in and 1 out still equals 3 altogether. We also learned about one more and one less than a number through songs, such as One Elephant went out to play, on a spider’s web one day…..’
In Monster Phonics this week we learned the sounds j, v, w, x. We learned the Tricky Words: if, off, you, my, they, for.
Just a reminder that Tuesday is Odd Socks Day in recognition of Anti Bullying Week. The theme is 'Choose Respect'. The children may come into school wearing odd socks! You can find more information on this on the main RPS channel on Parent Hub.
Have a lovely weekend.
