Two more weeks until we break up for the Christmas break! It is starting to become busier at this time of year so I appreciate your support throughout this time of year. We have had a busy week with rehearsal practice, walks to Repton school to see the pantomime of Dick Whittington, and we walked to the Repton 400 Hall on Friday so the children could have a mini practice before our performances next week! Look below to find out what we have been doing this week.
Maths
In our Maths learning this week, we have been learning about how we can add and subtract by 1 or 2. We know that by adding 2 means by adding 1 and then adding another 1, whilst subtracting 2 is taking away 1 and then taking away another 1.
We then also learned about how we can relate Maths facts to subtraction facts. By using the part-whole model, we can find 4 addition sentences, and 4 subtraction sentences. It was a tricky lesson, particularly finding the 2 subtraction sentences where the answer we put at the front of the equation (e.g. 5 = 7 -2). Here are some that you can have a go at home!
English
In our English learning, we have been learning a new piece of text called a setting description. We have started to learn about the setting description to how we normally do it using Talk 4 Writing. This week, we started by watching a video of a monkey out in space. We then read a piece of text and created our own text maps of the setting description.
In setting descriptions, we use adjectives to bring the scenery to life. We learnt how to use adjectives before a noun to create an expanded noun phrase such as 'the dark space' or 'the shiny stars'. We created our own sentences using an adjective and a noun about this picture.
History
Due to all the events that have happened this week, we have only had one lesson this week. We started to look at wars as they have happened in our history. Although WW1 happened over 100 years ago, it is still important for children to remember events like this. We learned about what it was like for soldiers in the trenches and what the conditions were like for them. We then created our own "RPS certificates" for WW1 soldiers and we had to come up with reasons why the soldiers deserved a certificate! Can you think of reasons why soldiers deserve a RESPECT certificate?
Phonics
In our Phonics learning, the children have been learning about the graphemes of /ow/, ou and ow. We also learned how the ow letters can also make an ow sound (/oa/) as well. Please use the Monster Phonics booklet to consolidate any sounds from this week.
