We have had another good week in Hedgehogs! Only 5 more weeks left before these Hedgehogs become Owls! We have done a lot of learning this week, and done many outdoor activities related to our science learning. Find out below what we have been up to.
Maths
In our Math learning, we have been learning all about mass and weight. On Monday and Tuesday, we started learning about how we can weigh objects. We found objects in the classroom and started weighing them using cubes. We then used this to compare the weight of objects, using the words 'heavier' and 'lighter'. The children were brilliant at this. Here are some pictures below.
We also learned about volume as well. We learned that volume is the amount of something that is in a container. We learned that there are many words to describe volume. We used the words empty, nearly empty, half full, more than half full, nearly full, and full to describe volumes. The children went outside and we made these volumes up using water and a variety of different containers. Can you how different volumes at home to a grown-up? Can you show a glass of orange juice that is nearly full? Full? Nearly empty? Half full/Half empty? Here are some pictures of us filling containers with different volumes!
English
This week in our English, we have been continuing our work on instructional writing. The children learned some key SPAG to help them with writing instructions. We learned how to use time conjunctions to sequence instructions so they are in order. We then learned how to use the conjunction 'and' to add more information to our instructions. We then wrote our instructions for how to save a whale. The children produced some fantastic pieces of work! Next week, the children were planning a set of instructions on how to save a popular book character!
Science
In our Science learning, the children have continued their work on plants. We started this week by learning the steps to growing a plant. We then looked at how trees are a type of plant. We did a bit of a game to help remember the different parts of the tree, and then we went onto our school field to look at trees and make some observational drawings of tree. We looked at features such as the bark, trunk, roots, leaves, branches, twigs and the crown. Here are some photos of us looking at trees. We also went to look around our school to find examples of evergreen and deciduous trees. Can you tell your grown-up an example of a deciduous tree, or an evergreen tree? What do those words mean?
Computing
We also went and had an explore in the forest school, but not for trees, but for minibeasts! The children learned about how we can collect data and put it into a grid. We learned how to use tally marks and we went off in the forest school to collect data on which minibeast was the most common. We then came back to the classroom and we turned some of the data into graphs!
Phonics and Spellings
In our Phonics this week, we recapped the sounds air, ear, ear (making the /air/ sound) and are (making the /air/ sound). Please use the Monster Phonics booklets to recap any sounds that your child has struggled with this week.
Dictation Sentences to Practise
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
