WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week Commencing 16.6.25

We have had a very busy week in Hedgehogs this week! 5 more weeks until we break up for the half-term! Look below to find out what we have been doing this week.

Maths

In our Math learning, we have been learning all about mass and weight. On Monday and Tuesday, we started learning about how we can weigh objects. We found objects in the classroom and started weighing them using cubes. We then used this to compare the weight of objects, using the words 'heavier' and 'lighter'. The children were brilliant at this. Here are some pictures below.

We also learned about volume as well. We learned that volume is the amount of something that is in a container. We learned that there are many words to describe volume. We used the words empty, nearly empty, half full, more than half full, nearly full, and full to describe volumes. The children went outside and we made these volumes up using water and a variety of different containers.  Can you how different volumes at home to a grown-up? Can you show a glass of orange juice that is nearly full? Full? Nearly empty? Half full/Half empty?

Measuring volume using different containers!

We also measured the capacity of containers too. We used full cups of water and we investigated the capacity of three containers by seeing how many full cups it would take to fill a container.

English

In our English learning this week, we are still continuing on with our stimulus on "Adventures are the Pits" but we are looking at a new unit of writing, persuasive writing.

We started to look at what a piece of persuasive writing looks like. We looked at an example (which you can see below) and we wanted to see its persuasive features.

We looked at some SPAG features like the prefix un- and the suffix -est and how it makes writing better.

We then created our own persuasive poster, using the SPAG above, about Repton's trim trail and skate park.

All this work is to prepare the children to plan and create a persuasive poster for their very own paper theme park. On Thursday, the children created their own incredible 3D theme parks, ready for us to plan and talk about them next week!

Here are our amazing theme parks below!

Science

We have now finished our DT project on mechanisms, and we have moved back into learning about science. For the next few weeks, we will be focusing on learning about plants. This week, the children learned about features of plants through observation. I brought in some local wild plants, and the children carefully looked for the anther, stem, roots, leaves and petals. The children carefully drew the plants, and I was so impressed with their care and determination!

We also went to look for wild plants in our school grounds. The children worked in groups to look for certain wild plants. We learned about brambles, dog rose, clover, nettles, daisies, buttercups, dandelions and ivy. We learned about how they are all different and what it means for a plant to be 'wild'.

Here are some pictures below of us drawing some of the plants!

Computing

In Computing, we used Sketchpad to create pictograms. We used the clipart features of Sketchpad to represent the data.

PSHE

We had a session today where we discussed 'private parts' and how our bodies belong to ourselves, and not to anyone else. This is to teach the importance that we can say 'no' to things that make us feel uncomfortable.

Phonics and Spellings

In Phonics this week, we recapped the digraphs ph and wh. We also recapped how the can make an /ee/ sound, and the can make an /oa/ sound. Please use the Monster Phonics booklets to recap any sounds that your child may struggle with.

Have a lovely weekend, and stay safe in the sun! I may see some of you at the Summer Fayre on Saturday!
