WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week Commencing 3.3.25

We have had an awesome week in the Hedgehogs class this week! We have had a lovely week celebrating the love of reading as part of World Book Week, and we have done lots of exciting things this week, especially on Thursday (World Book Day). Find out below what we have been up to!

Maths

In our Maths learning, we have been learning about how to subtract from numbers up to 20. We have remembered that subtracting is when we go backwards from a number. We started the week by learning that we can use number bonds to 10 to help us subtract from numbers to 20. For example;

8 - 2 = 6 so  18 - 2 = 16.

We learned that we can subtract by using the crossing out method, a number line or a ten frame for subtractions where we go past the 10 for example when it is 12 - 5. Here are a few examples below to see if you can practise subtracting, either by using your number bonds to 10 to help you, or using the crossing out method.

English

In our English learning, we have gone off time-table for this week and we have done activities centred around a book. We decided to do work all around the Roald Dahl book, 'The BFG'. The children have loved listening to me read chapters each day and finding out more about the BFG, including his funny speech! We have created our own giants, created our own nonsense words, and we have written about what dreams could be in our dream jar! We even created our own dream jars on World Book Day, which you can see below!

Geography

In our Geography learning this week, the children have continued to learn about poverty in Nairobi. We talked about how to make things better for Nairobi and how we can build the city of Kenya differently. The prime minister of Kenya tasked the children with planning a new map of Nairobi, to show how slums could be removed and how the city could be safer, tidier and better for everyone. Here are some of our maps below! If you were to create your own city, what would be in your city?

Phonics and Spellings

This week, we learned three new graphemes. We learned about the wh digraph making the /w/ sound. We learned that the letter e can make the /ee/ sound. We also learned that the letter o can make the /oa/ sound. Please use the time to read sheets to practise any sounds from this week.

World Book Day Activities

We had a lot of fun on World Book Day. Thank you to those parents who stayed for a portion of the morning to listen to children read - the children were so excited to read to someone new!  We did some activities to do with the BFG and created our dream jars, but the most exciting part of our day was the Potato parade!

Using the potatoes that the children brought in, the children used craft materials to bring their potatoes to life in the form of a book character. The children worked so hard on these and these were all the children's own work! See if you can guess who the characters are below!

Have a lovely weekend!
