WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week 4 - 5.5.26

We have had a lovely 4 day week! Look below to see what we have been up to this week!

Maths

This week, we started our unit on Fractions. We started to understand the term 'a half'. We learned that a half is when something is split into two equal parts. Have a look below, which objects do you think are halved? Can you tell your grown-up why some are halved and why some are not halved?

There is also this game which you are more than welcome to have a go at! https://kids.classroomsecrets.co.uk/resource/year-1-halving-shapes-or-objects-game/

We also practised halving amounts too. We learned that we can half amounts equally by sharing objects across two plates. We also explored that doubles are almost the opposite of halving!

English

In our English learning, we started a new stimulus. We are going to be looking at diary writing over the next few weeks. To engage the children into diary writing, the children watched a video called "Adventures are the Pits". You can watch the video here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zr9aiWQ8Tw

The children sequenced some pictures from the story to help them remember what had happened. The children then created their own scenes of the story using resources around the classroom! Here are some of their scenes below;

We also looked at an example of a diary entry as well, pretending that we were the boy in the story. What features can you spot this example below?

Science and DT

This week in Science, we did an assessment all to do with animals and humans. We then decided to keep on the theme of animals and we learned how to create sliders (using lollipop sticks) and pivots using split pins! This is because next week, the children will be designing their own animal, and make it move using these mechanisms! You can find photos of our creations below.

Art

This week, the children learned how to plait and knot with Mrs Ward as part of our woollen crafts unit.

Phonics and Dictation

In our Phonics learning, the children have been recapping the sounds ir, ur, oo, oo. Please use the time to read sheets to practise these sounds. Please also use the 2 QR codes that were sent this week to practise a list of real and nonsense words.

Dictations to practise;

  • I cam first place.
  • She got bad sunburn.
  • Look at the good girl.
  • The moon is bright!

Have a lovely weekend!
