WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week 1 - 1.6.26

Welcome back to our final half-term in Year 1! I hope you have all had a lovely, restful week. The children have come back to school focussed and ready to go, and they have done some fantastic learning. Look below to find out what they have been up to.

Maths

In our Maths learning, we finished off our unit on Place Value to 100 by practising comparing numbers up to 100. We used the "crocodile" comparison symbols <, > and = to compare numbers. We learnt that we can look at the tens digit to work out if a number is greater or less than a number. If the tens digits are the same, then we look at the ones digit instead! There is a game here which you can play to practise comparing numbers!

If you want to practise comparing, here are some numbers below! Can you use < , > or = to compare the numbers?

English

In our English learning, we have finished off work on diary writing, and with the stimulus "Adventures are the Pits". The children used their plans from before half-term to create an imaginative diary entry, imagining themself going on a ride and the feelings that come with that. The children all "blew me away" with their writing. When we edited our writing, I typed out all their diary entries and I put them in a class book so we can ready through our diary entries at any point. Well done Hedgehogs on a super piece of work!

Science

In our Science learning this week, we have started our new unit on Plants. We started off the week by looking at what is a plant. We learned that plants have several features that help them to grow. We learned that plants have roots, stems, leaves, petals and anthers. The children observed these features by looking at some forget-me-nots that I had brought from my garden. The children carefully drew the plants and labelled these features. Their drawings were incredible! Here are the children drawing in action.

We then went to explore 'wild plants' in our local area. We went round school to identify different plants around school. We found many wild plants including daisies, clover, dandelion, buttercups, nettles, brambles, dog rose and ivy. We went round the field to collect data and information on what plants were the most popular on our school field. Here are some pictures of us collecting information!

Computing - Representing zoo data using pictures and cubes!

Phonics

In our Phonics learning this week, we have recapped ew, ie, ie and aw. Please use the 'Time to read sheets' to practise reading words with these sounds.

I have also included some sheets below to practise over the weekend in the run up to the Phonics Screening Check. Please can you practise these words over the weekend, and correct your child if they say any of these words incorrectly.

Have a lovely weekend!
