Despite it being a short 4-day week, it has been a very busy one! We have had our Harvest service at St Wystan's Church, a trip to the Children's Country House in Sudbury and we have done our learning on top of all of this! Look below to find information, photos and activities from this week.
Maths
In our Maths learning this week, we have been learning all about part-whole models and how we can use these models to create addition sentences. We learned that we can create two addition sentences from a part-whole model, as we can swap the parts round. If we swap the parts around, the whole still remains the same. This is the idea of commutativity. Here is a picture below to explain it.
From these part-whole models we can create the addition sentences;
4 + 3 = 7
3 + 4 = 7
We also learned that we can swap the number sentence around like this so the whole is at the front of the number sentence.
7 = 4 + 3
7 = 3 + 4
Can you create some addition sentences for these part-whole models below?
English
In our English learning this week, the children innovated the set of instructions on how to make a spinning top. The children helped Mr Armishaw create a set of instructions on how to make a cheese sandwich (which Mr Armishaw actually did in class). The children worked in pairs and created a list of instructions using time conjunctions, verbs and punctuation to create a set of clear instructions. Can you tell your grown-up how to make a sandwich using time conjunctions (first, then, next, after that, finally)?
History - Trip to Children's Country House.
The children had an incredible time learning all about childhood, homes, and jobs over 100 years ago, consolidating all the learning we have done so far. The children behaved beautifully throughout and we were very lucky to have such good weather. It was very fun and interactive, and many of the children want to go again. If you do want any information about the trip, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help with any information.
Here are some photos from our day!
We also looked at money and how money was different 100 years ago. We learned that people had pennies, but they were worth different amounts back then. People also had shillings where 1 shilling was the same as 12 pennies! We then looked at an actual shopping list belonging to a postal worker in 1920 to find out what things he bought and for how much. Work with a grown-up to look at the source below!
Phonics and Spellings
We have not had many Phonics lessons this week due to it being a shorter week. This week, we have recapped the ee digraph and we have looked at the suffixes -ed and -ing. We add suffixes to the end of verbs to change the verb to be in the past tense (for -ed) and present tense (for -ing).
I will not be setting Spellings over half term. I have set some optional Spelling Shed and Maths Shed activities for the duration of the break. Your child also has their reading record and book to read over the half-term as well.
Have a lovely half-term break and enjoy a well-deserved break!
