It has been another fantastic week in Foxes class this week! We have been busy learning about Tudor battles, stories involving emotions, lights glowing in derelict, old cottages and much more!
In English, we started the week looking at how to write more interesting sentences, using Alan Peat techniques. The children learnt techniques such as using emotion words to start sentences; outside (inside) sentences; the more, the more sentences, personification of weather and 3-ed sentences! Ask us to see if we can remember them!
Throughout the rest of the week, we have planned and written short stories. The children did an amazing job at including emotions in their stories (our stimulus). They thought carefully about how they would get their characters to convey emotion and how they would help their character to find a resolution towards the end. I was very impressed that the children included some of the Alan Peat techniques that they learnt at the beginning of the week – well done everyone!
In Maths, the Year 5s have been learning about numbers to 1 million! They have learned to read and write them as well as finding 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 more or less than given numbers! They learnt how to multiply using powers of 10 and how we can use our previous learnt knowledge to help us with this.
The Year 6s have finished off their work on place value this week. They have been learning how to multiply and divide by powers of 10, comparing and ordering whole numbers, rounding whole numbers and solving calculations using negative numbers. They will be learning about the four operations next week.
In History, we started learning about the Tudors! We started by looking at a range of artefacts and evidence that historians use and considered their reliability. We then analysed the artefacts to decipher their relevance to that time period. Later in the week, we discovered facts about the War of the Roses and the conflict between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists. We learnt about the most influential battle: The Battle of Bosworth, where King Richard III got killed, causing the end of the war and the beginning of the Tudor dynasty.
