We have had another busy week in Foxes class. It has involved countries, discoveries and, of course, Red Nose Day!
In English this week, the children began writing using our new stimulus: China. In this unit, using the knowledge they have obtained over the last term, the children will be writing non-chronological reports about China. So far, their learning has involved: identifying features of a non-chronological report, recognising and using parenthesis, writing an informative paragraph (about a Chinese city) and planning a report about China. The children have each selected topics they would like to include in their non-chronological report and have carefully planned notes around these, ready to write, edit and publish their reports next week!
In Maths, the Year 5s have been completing their learning about fractions, decimals and percentages and have done a fantastic job making connections between the three! They have enjoyed problem solving and reasoning with this concept. Next week we will be consolidating our learning of perimeter of shapes. Year 6 have completed their area and perimeter unit of work this week which has involved finding the area of a parallelogram, finding the volume of a shape by counting cubes, and finding the volume of a cuboid using a formula. They have also started their statistics unit of work - reading, interpreting and drawing dual line graphs and bar charts.
This week in Geography, we have been learning about the rich history of ancient China by exploring its different dynasties and how each one shaped the country’s culture and development. We looked at how rulers changed over time and the achievements that made each dynasty unique. After that, we focused on the fascinating discovery of the Terracotta Army, learning why it was built and what it reveals about Emperor Qin Shi Huang and his rule. To finish, we used our imaginations to write a creative piece based on the Terracotta Army, imagining what it might have been like to see the warriors being built or to step into their world thousands of years ago.
Red Nose Day
On Friday, we recognised Red Nose Day in school by wearing red items and learning about how the charity helps people. We completed some small activities to mark the day.
Homework -
Children have been given their final round of practice papers this week, therefore there is no official Maths and English homework set as we would like them to spend time reviewing their papers. We also ask that they practise their spellings, times tables and read at home as much as possible alongside this.
Spellings -
Year 6 - produce, silence, balance, reason, suspect, present, question, transport, surprise, scratch
Year 5 - fate, fete, desert, dessert, stationary, stationery, great, grate, grown, groan
Have a fantastic weekend,
Miss Hanslow
