This week has been filled with Terrible Tudors, fractions and Tudor crimes. Read on to find out more…
In English this week, we wrapped up our Terrible Tudors unit. This included a lively, structured debate on whether Henry VIII was a good king, as well as writing limericks about notable Tudor figures.
Later in the week, we introduced the children to our new writing stimulus: War Game. In our first lesson, we watched a video about the Christmas Truce of 1914 and answered questions to check understanding. We then explored ways to describe No Man’s Land, using figurative language and the five senses to create vivid imagery. After building a rich bank of descriptive words and phrases, the children produced wonderfully detailed setting descriptions.
In Maths this week, Year 6 have successfully completed their fractions unit. They worked on finding a fraction of an amount, calculating the whole, and revisiting the various methods and rules learned throughout the topic. They have now moved on to their new unit: converting units. This week’s focus has been on converting and calculating with metric measures.
Year 5 have continued their work on fractions, concentrating on converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers. They will carry on developing their understanding of fractions next week.
In History this week we explored the fascinating jobs that Tudor people had during this period. After learning about these unusual roles, the children chose one to ‘apply’ for, considering which job they would most enjoy and explaining how their skills would make them a good fit. Can you explain to your grown up what Spitboys, Bearwards and Resurrectionists did?! We also created our own Tudor court to decide what punishments Tudor criminals would receive for their horrendous crimes!

Please note that we will be completing a few more assessments next week. We appreciate that these can be overwhelming for the children therefore wanted to give you a heads up to prepare the children for what is to come next week. We look forward to beginning our Christmas celebrations once the assessments are over!
Have a super weekend,
