WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week 4 - 24.11.25

Maths

In our Maths learning, we have been learning about how we can subtract using different methods. We learnt that we can subtract using different methods. We learnt about the crossing off method and how we can use that to help solve subtractions. We learnt that the first number in the subtraction number sentence is how many counter/circles we need. The second number is the number to cross off. The answer is how many are left remaining. Have a look at these subtractions below. Can you work out what subtraction number sentence is being shown?

English

In our English learning, we have been learning some vocabulary to describe the events of the Titanic. These are the words we have tried to use in some sentences this week.

We have also learned how we can write sentences using the conjunction 'and'. A conjunction is a word that joins two sentences or clauses together. We used the conjunction 'and' to join two sentences about the Titanic. Look at the pictures below. Can you think of a sentence to join to these sentences below, using the conjunction 'and'?

History

In our History learning, we have started to learn about beliefs and how things have changed over 100 years. We started to look at the suffragette movement, and the rights of women 100 years ago. The children were horrified to learn that women did not have the same rights as men, and they were not allowed to vote. We compared how things have changed today.

We also spoke about racism through time. We looked at how there was segregation, particularly in America, throughout history. We looked at the story of Rosa Parks. Before introducing the story, I told the story without mentioning skin colour. We used Mr Armishaw's scarves as a way to show those with white skin, and those without a scarf as those with black skin. You can see our acting below. We retold the events of;

- Rosa being on the bus.

- People coming onto the bus, with white people sitting at the front, and black people sitting at the back.

- Rosa being asked to move and she refused.

- Rosa's arrest.

- Boycotting of buses.

- No longer any segregation between white people and black people on buses.

Through this retelling, and eventually telling children that actually the scarves meant differences in skin colour, children really felt sympathy for Rosa and those who faced racism and segregation. We talked again about how things are different now and how we are less segregated. We also talked about the importance that everyone is equal. It was a lovely lesson with lots of good discussion.

PSHE

In our PSHE lesson this week, we had a fun lesson about germs. We talked about the importance of hand washing, and how keeping our hands clean was a way of keeping us healthy. We learned about microbes in our skin, and how some microbes are good and some are bad. The children then did a mini-experiment where we put our finger in some soap and watched microbes (black pepper in water) disperse! Here are some pictures below.

Phonics and Spellings

This week in our Phonics, we looked at the suffixes -er, and -est. We use these to the end of adjectives to make them seem greater e.g. quick -> quicker -> quickest. We also looked at the oe digraph, in words such as toes. Please use the Monster Phonics booklet to revise any of these sounds your children may struggle with.

Christmas Production

It is not long until our Christmas production!

If you are free on Tuesday 4th, Wednesday 10th, or Thursday 11th to walk with the children to the Repton 400 Hall, please can you email me at hedgehogs@repton-pri.derbyshire.sch.uk. I would really appreciate it!

In a previous letter I sent out before half-term, I mentioned about costumes being needed by Monday 3rd December. Please can we have them then as we will do a costume rehearsal this coming week.

Have a lovely weekend!
