WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week 4 - 29.9.25

We have had another awesome week in Hedgehogs this week! Although I have not been in class much due to being on courses, and for illness, the Hedgehogs have still demonstrated super behaviour and have been lovely. Mrs Ward, who has covered me most of the week, wants to say what a delight the Hedgehogs have been, so keep it up superstars! Look below to find out what we have been learning about this week.

Maths

In our Maths learning this week, we have been learning all about how we can compare numbers. We learned that we can compare objects and numbers using words such as fewer and more. We also learned about one of Mr Armishaw's favourite mathematical symbols - the crocodiles! These are symbols that we use to compare two numbers. The crocodiles that we learned about are below, and there are examples of how they are used;

The children had a go at comparing numbers using crocodiles in Friday's lesson. Here are some pictures below. There are also some activities on Maths Shed that consolidate our learning this week too!

Using 'crocodile' symbols to compare numbers (<, > and =)!

English

In our English learning, we have started to learn a story called Oi! Get off Our Train!. The children listened and watched the trailer for the story. We then learned some vocabulary from the story, such as the spelling of some of the animals and some WOW Words that we can use in our writing.

We then learnt what adjectives were. The children came up with some adjectives to describe the animals from our story such as 'massive', and 'grey' and 'fierce'. Look at the animals below, can you think of adjectives to describe them. Maybe write some down and bring them into school on Tuesday for show and tell!

Other Areas of the Curriculum

History

In our History learning, we have moved away from learning about Childhood to look at Jobs from the past 100 years. We learnt how many jobs have changed over time because of technology. We learnt particularly about some jobs from the past that were unusual such as Typists, Telephone Operators, Chimney Sweepers, Knocker-Uppers, Silent Movie Actors. We learnt how to do these jobs through role-play and we had so much fun! Here are some photos below.

Computing

In our Computing lesson this week, we continued practising using computers. We particularly focussed on developing our mouse skills this week. We went on Sketchpad and we learnt how to drag and drop, how to add a background and how to duplicate pictures. The children worked in pairs to see if they could do this. Here are some of their creations below!

PSHE

In our PSHE lesson, we learnt that we can detect how people are feeling by looking at their body and face to give us clues. We talked about how looking at someone's body can help us to find out what we can do to make someone feel a bit better.

Art

In our Art lesson, we were learning how we can connect lines to create shapes. The children were given simple incomplete lines and had to turn them into shapes/objects that were familiar to them!

Phonics and Spellings

In our Phonics this week we learnt what plurals were. Plurals are where there is more than one noun e.g. cats, foxes. We learnt that we add +s to a noun to make it plural, but if it ends in a ch, sh, x, zz, ss we add +es.

We also learned our first split digraph in Year 1, a_e. This is quite a new concept to the children, but an important one. We learnt that the split digraphs have a consonant that splits the digraph up, for example in the word 'make', the 'k' splits the ae digraph up. To help with learning this, I have set some of these words as spellings for this week.

Remember our trip to the Museum of Childhood is on Monday so please remember to arrive at school promptly so we can leave on time. Also, please remember to bring water bottles, coats and sandwich boxes if you have declared that you are providing your child with this.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mr Armishaw
