Our Learning
We have had another wonderful week in Seals class. It has involved roses, cottages and much more!
English –
Our English work this week has continued to focus on feelings. At the beginning of the week, we developed our descriptive writing skills even further by using a range of complex Alan Peat sentence types. These included 'Outside, Inside sentences', 'Personification of weather' and 'Emotion word,' sentences to name a few. For the rest of the week, the children have been planning and writing their first story of the year! They were tasked with creating their own characters and storylines for a short story, thinking carefully about any feelings that would be included throughout. They were encouraged to 'show not tell' their feelings and use the descriptive writing skills learned so far to add detail and imagery to their stories, creating more excitement for the reader!
Maths –
Year 6 have completed their place value work this week. This has included: multiplying and dividing integers by powers of 10, comparing and ordering any integer, rounding any integer to the nearest 10,100,1000,10,000 and 100,000, and solving calculations using negative numbers. We will be moving on to the four operations unit of work next week.
Year 5 have continued their place value work this week too. This has involved reading and writing numbers to 1,000,000, finding 10,100,1000, 10,000 and 100,000 more or less than any given number and exploring powers of 10.
History -
This term we are learning about The Tudors and on Monday, we had our first lesson based around this topic. We started by discussing how we know about the past, considering the types of evidence historians use, and thinking carefully about the reliability of various sources. We then worked independently to analyse a selection of artefacts from the Tudor period, thinking about what/who was being shown and its significant to that time period. During our second lesson this week, we discovered facts about the War of the Roses and the conflict between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists. We focused most of our attention to the Battle of Bosworth field, a battle that ended the War of the Roses and saw the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Ask your child if they can remember the name of the first Tudor monarch!
