WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week beginning 20.10.24

Our Learning

I cannot believe we have reached the end of the first half term already! It has been wonderful getting to know the children this half term and I am looking forward to the year ahead spent together!

English –

This week, the children have been practising their proofreading, editing and improving skills. Our first lesson this week was a dictation and transcription lesson. The children had to write a passage that was read to them in their books, using the correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. This required excellent listening skills and great concentration, and the Seals were fantastic! Our second lesson of the week was a sentence structuring lesson. We wrote simple sentences about picture pairs, focusing our attention to the basics of grammar, such as capital letters and full stops. During our final lesson this week, the children put their editing skills to the test by improving a text. They added detail and description to a story using a range of literary devices, including figurative language and 'show not tell' feelings. The children are already making progress in writing and should be proud of their efforts in English so far this year - Keep it up, Seals!

Maths –

Year 6 have consolidated their termly learning this week. This has involved an end of unit assessment for the four operations, a recap of the long multiplication and long division methods, and further opportunities to develop our reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Year 5 have moved on to multiplication and division this week. So far this has involved finding multiples of a number and reasoning from known facts.

History -

We continued learning about the wives of Henry VIII this week, focusing on the last 3 wives he had. We discussed what their marriage to Henry was like and discovered their final fates. When we return, we will learn about the reign of King Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth I!

Art -

We have ended our first half term with some seasonal art work: A Halloween Silhouette Painting. It is safe to say the children have enjoyed getting crafty this afternoon!

Homework –

Children have been given their practise assessments to look through over the half term. They are also encouraged to read and practise their spellings/times tables alongside this.
