This week we asked the question ‘how does a caterpillar change?’. We will soon find out for real, as were so excited to receive young caterpillars into our class! We put them into their own little pots with food and will watch as they grown bigger and change into chrysallis then butterflies. We can’t wait to see what happens.
We learned about the life cycle of a butterfly; from egg to caterpillar, to chrysalis to butterfly. We used the internet to find information and watched videos of butterflies and their life cycles. We talked about how they are all different, all symmetrical and made our own symmetrical butterflies, both using IT and at the art table. Can you explain the life cycle?
We made symmetrical butterflies by folding paper, with a butterfly outline and blobs and patterns of paint on one wing. When we opened them, they were all different and all symmetrical!
We are also very lucky to have some tadpoles, from Angus's family to also watch as they develop into froglets and then hopefully frogs!
We supported our learning about minibeasts by reading 'Superworm' by Julia Donaldson. Superworm helped a lot of other creatures in the story so we wrote our own version of things that he did for other creatures, such as 'He was a hat for a snail', or 'He was a swing for a bee'. The children loved this activity and were really good at writing their sentences almost independently!
We also extended our learning about odd and even numbers. We had remembered that even numbers contain twos with none left over. Odd numbers always have one odd number left over. We thought about what would happen if we tried to share even and odd numbers by 2. We explored this and found that even numbers can share equally and odd cannot. There is always one left over.
In Monster Phonics this week, we have been practising reading and writing ccvcc words using our previously taught digraphs. We also continued to write and use our 3 new tricky words – ‘time, out, house, about’. Please continue to read with your child regularly. It really makes a difference to their confidence and fluency. Please also continue to use spelling shed. Again, this really helps the children to develop confidence and fluency with their segmenting and spelling skills.
Have a lovely weekend!
