Our Learning
We have had another fabulous week in Seals class. It has involved capital cities, character comparisons and caffeine.
English –
In English, we used the descriptive ideas we had written last week about Kai breaking the golden seal to free the Monkey King to write narrative paragraphs. The children focused on including as much detail as possible by incorporating expanded noun phrases, relative clauses and fronted adverbials. We finished the story of the Monkey King and used our knowledge of Kai and Wen to compare the two characters throughout the story. We thought about their similarities and differences and how they change throughout the story.
Maths -
Year 5 began their new unit focusing on multiplication and division this week. We began the week by looking at the grid method and then moved onto the formal method of multiplication to help us multiply a 4-digit number by a 2-digit number. We worked on making sure that our presentation of the formal method was perfect so that it was clear to all how we had worked out our answers.
Year 6 have carried on with their unit on algebra. They have formed equations using visual representations to support their learning as well as thinking about how to solve multi-step equations and find pairs of values using substitution.
Geography -
In Topic, we have compared the capital city of China, Beijing, and the capital city of England, London. Features such as Buckingham Palace, the River Thames and Tower Bridge were mentioned for London. Can you share with a grown-up what physical features we discovered Beijing had?
Towards the end of the week, we looked at the physical features of China in more detail, identifying key rivers/mountains and their locations.
Homework –
Children have been given a piece of Maths and English homework this week which relates to the learning we have been doing in school. The tasks have been explained in school, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to find me. Homework is due on Tuesday 27th January 2026
