We have had a super week this week with lots of exciting learning going on! Look below to find out what we have been doing this week!
Maths
In our Maths learning, we have finished off our work on multiplication and division. This week we have been focused on sharing amounts, which is the early steps to learning the division symbol. In class, we talked about ways that we can share objects across groups using concrete resources and using pictures to help us. We learned that if we can't share amounts equally, then it is unequal and it has a remainder. Can you have a go at sharing 20 objects across 2 plates? Across 5 plates? Across 10 plates? What happens to the number?
We also started our work on Fractions. On Friday, we started to understand the term 'a half'. We learned that a half is when something is split into two equal parts. Have a look below, which objects do you think are halved? Can you tell your grown-up why some are halved and why some are not halved?
There is also this game which you are more than welcome to have a go at! https://kids.classroomsecrets.co.uk/resource/year-1-halving-shapes-or-objects-game/
English
In our English learning, we have been continuing our work on rhyming poetry. This week, the children were very creative and we learned how to create rhyming couplets. We started by writing a sentence about a chosen animal. Then we thought of some rhyming words that rhymed with the last word of that sentence. Finally, we thought about another sentence that finished with that rhyming word. We had such good fun thinking of rhymes and thinking of playful, creative sentences! Can you help Mr Armishaw create some rhyming sentences? He has the first sentence ready, but he is unsure of what rhyming couplet could go with it!

Science
In our science learning, we have been learning about carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. We learned that carnivores are animals that eat other animals, a herbivore is an animal that eats plants, and an omnivores is an animal that eats both animals and plants. We did an experiment to work out what certain animals were by observing what was in their 'poo'! The children used sticks to prod and observe what they could find in the poo to determine whether an owl, a tortoise, a frog, a bear and a shark are carnivores, omnivores or herbivores. Look below to see some photos of our experiment. Can you tell your grown-up what you saw in each specimen?
Computing
In our Computing lesson, we looked at how we can find photos on the internet and edit them using Sketchpad.
The children went onto the Google search engine to find animals of their choice and then copy and paste them onto Sketchpad. They then used the filters button to edit the colouration and size of their images. Here are some photos of their work below!
Phonics and Spellings
This week in our Phonics, we recapped the ow, ue, ue and ew digraphs. As we are approaching the Phonics Screening Check, and these are tricky digraphs to learn and remember, if you have time please look through the Monster Phonics booklets to practise reading words with these sounds.
Information about next week
I hope all that information makes sense.
Have a lovely weekend!
