One more week to go Hedgehogs! I can tell we are all winding down for the Summer break, including myself, but we are almost there. 4 days to go! Look below to find out what we have done this week.
Maths
In our Maths learning this week, we have started (and finished) our final Maths unit on Position and Direction. This week, we have been learning about quarter turns, half turns, three-quarter turns and full turns. We practised turning 2D shapes using these 4 different ways, and played a game where we had to practise turning on the spot these turns too. We also learned about anti-clockwise and clockwise directions too. I have some challenges below. See if you can answer them with a grown-up!
We have also been learning about other positional words and phrases used to describe movements and directions such as forwards and backwards, left and right, above and below, up and down. Then on Thursday, we learned about ordinal numbers. We see ordinal numbers all the time on dates, diaries and in competitions. We learned about the main ones such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. Here is a challenge you can have a go at with your family about ordinal numbers.
Challenge
English
In our English, the children have been learning about non-chronological reports. The children learned how to create questions for a report on a picture of an orca. The children then worked in pairs to create their own non-chronological report about orcas. We had some beautiful pieces of work. What questions can you come up with about this orca? If you were an alien, what would you want to know about orcas? Use this word mat and this picture to help you?
Science
In our Science learning, we have started our final unit on 'Everyday Materials'. We started looking at what objects we have in the classroom and what material it is made from. We went on a scavenger hunt to find things in the classroom and sort them into what it's made from. We found out that objects can be made from multiple materials. Can you work with your grown-up to find an object made of each of these materials below? *Can you think of any other materials not on this spinner?
We also learned about properties of materials this week. We used words like hard, soft, rough, smooth, bendy, stiff, stretchy, transparent, opaque to describe objects.
We then explored the properties of waterproof and absorbency. We tested a variety of materials to find out which material would be best for an umbrella. The children worked in groups to prepare and experiment where we would see if water was absorbed into the material, or whether water bounced off the material. What materials above do you think are absorbent? Which ones are waterproof?
Phonics
In our Phonics work this week, we recapped the split-digraphs that we have learned about this year.
Colour Run
Thank you for all your support with raising funds for the PTA Colour Run. It was a great success and it was so much fun! Here are some photos below!
Just a reminder to bring in a heavy-duty bag for next Tuesday so we can put your child's books in the bag. It needs to withstand roughly 13 books! We will send the books home on Wednesday.
Have a lovely weekend!
