Three more weeks to go until the end of term! The Hedgehogs have showed no sign of stopping their fantastic learning, but I think it is safe to say that we are all very tired! Look below to find out what we have been doing this week.
Maths
In our Maths learning, the children have been learning all about time. The children started the week by learning about o'clock. We learned that in o'clock times, the minute hand (the longer hand) is on the 12, and the hour hand (the little hand) is on the hour. We made times using some handheld clocks, which the children loved. We also then learned about half past as well. We learned that when a time is half past, the minute hand is on the 6 as it has gone 'halfway' around the clock, and the hour hand goes past the hour. Here are some clocks below. Can you work out the times with the help of your grown-up? Maybe if you look at your clock at home, maybe it is a time that you now know!
There are also activities and quizzes to do with time on Maths Shed.
English
In our English learning, we have been learning a story to write our final piece of writing. We have been learning the story of The Storm Whale. This is a beautiful book written by Benji Davies. We started off by listening to the story and identifying some good vocabulary about the book.
We learned some of the words below. Can you tell a grown-up a sentence from the story using any of these words?
We also acted out the story of the Storm Whale by using freeze frames! We had a lot of fun doing these actions!
Science
In our Science learning this week, we created a plant diary to track the seeds we planted two weeks ago. Thankfully, the seeds have been growing quite well for most of the children and we have seen many shoots, stems, leaves, and even one petal! We used our observation skills to draw what we could see so far, and next week we will observe our plants again to see if there are any changes in its growth.
Computing
In our Computing lesson, we have been learning how to create a database. We used our work on minibeasts from last week to create a database with 'yes' and 'no' questions so we can separate information into groups, also known as categorising. It was a tricky lesson, but we got the hang of it!
Phonics and Spellings
This week, the children have been learning about compound words (where two words can combined to make one word) and contractions. Contractions are where we can combine two words together to make one word, but you lose letters and replace them with an apostrophe. The children were really good at remembering the rules for this. As it is quite a tricky concept, I have decided to set them as spellings to continue the practise with this.
Transition Day
The Hedgehogs had a great day with Miss Kaylor and the team on Wednesday. They all came back to the classroom with smiles and excitement about their time in their future new classroom.
Have a lovely weekend!
