Have a look below to find out what learning we have done this week!
Maths
In our Maths learning we have been learning about how to add numbers up to 20. On Monday, we started to use number lines and ten frames to add numbers together. We then learnt how we can use our knowledge of number bonds up to 10 to make number bonds up to 20. For example, 2 + 5 = 7 is very similar to the bond 12 + 5 = 17. The ones are the same, but there is a ten added to one of the numbers. Have a go at some of the problems below. See if you can solve the ones at the bottom by just adding the ones first, and then adding the 10!
English
In our English learning, we have started a new genre called 'Recount' writing. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning skills to create a recount about a day in the life of a child living in rural Kenya.
We first of all learnt that a recount is a piece of text that talks about the past. It is written in the first person, and it is normally written in chronological order. We started off the week by learning about Mr Armishaw's recount of his best day ever. We wrote sentences about Mr Armishaw's recount by using past tense, writing in the first person, and using time conjunctions.
We then wrote our own recounts about what we did at the weekend. We used the conjunction 'and' to join sentences together.
On Thursday, we watched an animation video called Zahra to get the children inspired by Kenyan rural life. You can watch it here too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OR12uZewOU. Watch the video. How is she feeling in the video? What can you see? Why do you think the tree grew at the end?
Geography
In our Geography learning, we have been learning about the Maasai Mara. We learnt about what the Maasai Mara Reserve. We went onto Google Earth to find out where it is located. We then watched some videos about what you can see/do in the Maasai Mara. Can you tell your grown-up what life is like in the Maasai Mara? Here is a video if you want to watch more about it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbqCXpmo15A&t=866s.
We also looked at Kenya's climate and weather to find out the differences between Kenya and the UK.
Here is the map that we looked at. Can you identify which areas are arid, tropical and humid? Which areas get rain? Which areas are really dry?
We also briefly spoke about how Kenya experiences droughts and flooding. We looked at some pictures of the effects of this as well.
Phonics
In our Phonics this week, we have been recapping the air trigraph. We have also learnt about the au digraph making the /or/ sound. We also learnt about the prefix -un and how that can be added to the start of the words to change the meaning of some verbs and some adjectives. Please use the Monster Phonics booklets to practise any sounds that your child may struggle with.
Spellings
If you have not handed in your child's parents evening slip, please could you return it to me by Monday 10th February. I can then allocating and confirming parents evening slots for March.
Have a lovely weekend!
