Zones of Regulation

At Repton Primary School we aim to develop children’s understanding of their own emotions. We want to help them to identify their emotions and feelings, understand why they feel the way they do and work out how they can support themselves in these emotions. We do this through using Zones of Regulation.

All children should understand that no emotion is bad, they are all just different and make us act and feel differently depending on what emotion we are experiencing.

All the way from our smallest Robins to our biggest children in Year 6, we work on encouraging them to develop their own understanding of not only their own emotions but also the emotions of those around them.

Each classroom has a zones of regulation display with all of our different zones of regulation emotion characters on them as you can see below. Within each of these zones are a selection of strategies for children to choose to help them cope with whatever emotion they are feeling. The children are encouraged to check in regularly with our zones of regulation display. This allows them to share with the adults around them which zone they are in. With the use of the toolkits in each zone they can think about whether they might need some help to regulate their emotions or could they possibly choose a strategy to help them regulate themselves.

In the below subpages you can look in more detail at our zones of regulation emotion characters created by Mr Armishaw, the strategies that we encourage children to use when in those different zones and also some stories that have been created by Mr Armishaw to help introduce these emotions to our younger children.
