WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Week beginning 20.01.24

Our Learning

It has been another busy yet wonderful week in Seals class. It has involved grid references, fear and fire safety!

English –

At the beginning of the week, the children completed and edited their biographies about famous Canadians. On Wednesday, we introduced our new fiction unit of work based around the children's book, 'The Gruffalo'. The main focus of our work so far has been centred around 'fear' based on the main character, the fearsome Gruffalo, who scares the other characters in the story. Our learning so far has included: using expanded noun phrases and figurative language to describe fears; considering thoughts and feelings associated with fear; understanding the actions and reactions of someone who is experiencing fear; and writing a descriptive and suspenseful paragraph about facing your fear!

Maths -

We have begun our decimals work this week. So far, we have looked at the place value of decimals, rounded decimals to the nearest integer, rounded decimals to the nearest tenth and hundredth, added and subtracted decimals, and multiplied and divided decimals by powers of 10. We will continue our decimals work next week.

Geography -

This week, we have continued learning about Canada's physical geography. This has involved learning about the formation of physical features, such as lakes, rivers, mountains, bays and glaciers. We have also learned how to use six figure grid references to locate features on a map. Using our knowledge, we used six figure grid references to locate popular natural attractions in Canada. We will be learning about some of Canada's most impressive 'natural wonders' next week!

Fire Safety-

We were lucky enough to be one of two classes visited in school this week by a member of the Fire Service and Rescue Team. It was a brilliant and informative visit in which the children were taught how fires are caused, how to prevent fires, how to spot fire hazards in the home, how to check your smoke alarm, how to make an emergency call, what to do in a fire emergency, the damaging effects of hoax/prank calls, and much more! It was a fabulous opportunity for the children to learn more about fire safety and ask any questions they may have about fires and the work of the fire brigade.

Children have been given a piece of Maths and English homework this week which relates to the learning we have been doing in school. The tasks have been explained in school, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to find me. Homework is due on Monday 27th January 2025
