It’s been a lovely first week back with the Otters and we have really settled in to our new classroom and our routine.

We have started ‘Exploring Emotions’ in PSHE and had a challenge to try and think of an emotion for every letter of the alphabet. We then categorised these into positive and negative emotions. We started our new science unit all about materials and their properties. We looked at terms such as flammable, reflective, translucent, hard, flexible and many more.

We have also created art work for our classrooms, started RE and French with Mrs Jones and created birthday cards for our classmates.

We have started our place value unit in Maths where we have looked at Roman Numerals and understanding numbers up to 100,000. We have been so careful to make sure that we understand how to read and say these bigger numbers correctly as it will really help us in our future Maths lessons this year if we get a good grounding of our place value knowledge. We have been very impressed and the children have been very resilient with some tricky place value related problems! 

In PE, we have started our volleyball unit and we have been working on our serving. We have made a start on our first whole class reading book - "Letters from the lighthouse" and it has been so lovely as lots of children have already expressed that they want to find out what happens next. 

We have also started our Maya topic. We have created a timeline with some key dates. In order to do this, we needed to look at what we mean by BC and AD. We have also looked at where the Maya people settled. We used our co-ordinate skills from Maths to help work out four figure grid references on a map of Maya settlements.  We are very much looking forward to our workshop with Dr Diane next week. 

There were lots of tired children at the end of this week so we hope that you all have a restful break over the weekend. We will hand out spellings and homework next week.
