WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Maths

At Repton Primary School, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning. White Rose is based on a mastery approach, which means children are encouraged to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts rather than simply learning procedures by rote. Lessons are carefully sequenced so that new learning builds on previous knowledge, allowing children to develop confidence, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Throughout Year 4, children are encouraged to:

  • Explain their thinking using mathematical language.
  • Represent ideas using concrete resources, pictorial models and abstract methods.
  • Solve problems in a range of contexts.
  • Spot patterns and make connections between different areas of mathematics.
  • Develop resilience and confidence when tackling challenging problems.

Our lessons follow the White Rose philosophy of"small steps learning", where concepts are carefully broken down and explored in depth before children move on to more complex ideas.
