Science and DT

Science in Year 4

In Year 4, children continue to develop their scientific knowledge whilst learning how to work scientifically by asking questions, making predictions, carrying out investigations and drawing conclusions from evidence.

Throughout the year, children will study a range of exciting topics including:

States of Matter

Children learn about solids, liquids and gases, exploring how materials can change state through heating and cooling. They will investigate melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation through practical experiments.

Sound

Children discover how sounds are made through vibrations and investigate how sound travels. They will explore pitch, volume and how we can change sounds using different materials and instruments.

Electricity

Children will build simple electrical circuits and learn how electrical components such as bulbs, switches and buzzers work. They will test different circuits and investigate what makes them work successfully.

Living Things and Their Habitats

Children explore how living things can be grouped in different ways and learn about classification. They will investigate local habitats and discover how environments support different plants and animals.

Animals Including Humans

Children learn about the digestive system, teeth and food chains. They will discover how the body processes food and explore the important role different organisms play within ecosystems.

Working Scientifically

Across all topics, children will:

  • Carry out practical investigations.
  • Make predictions.
  • Observe changes over time.
  • Collect and present data.
  • Use scientific vocabulary accurately.
  • Draw conclusions based on evidence.
