In bold font, there are some questions for you to ask your child if you wish which follows on from their learning at school.
This week, children have been learning about fact families and related facts. This knowledge can help support them when they are working with more complex calculations when they are older. For example, knowing 4 number sentences from one fact family, such as 4 + 3 = 7 so 3 + 4 = 7 and 7 - 3 = 4 so 7 - 4 = 3. Children have been showing these facts with bar models and part whole models too. Can you show me 4 number sentences using these 3 numbers: 5 7 12
In English this week, children have worked hard to plan their stories based on the Percy the Park Keeper 'One Snowy Night' story. Children have thought carefully about what they want the weather to be like and carefully considered which animals knock at Percy's door! They have then practised the description and they have written paragraphs from Miss Tymon's planning, helping to learn the structure of the narrative. What expanded noun phrases will you use to describe your animals? What adverb might you use to describe how Percy opens the door to the animals? When will you need to use a capital letter in your writing next week?
Spellings: These are spellings we explored last week.

In history this week, children have been learning about what jobs came about during the Industrial Revolution. More opportunities came about to work which means more poor people worked. Even though the work was often dangerous and unpleasant, it meant they could feed their families. Which jobs did you learn about during the lesson? Which one do you think was the most dangerous and why? We have also been learning about the Industrial Revolution and what that meant. Can you tell someone at home what the advantages and disadvantages were to it? |
In art, children have been learning how to draw different expressions and they spent time looking at some of Quentin Blake's illustrations. They were able to sketch their own simple 'faces' focussing on eyebrows, mouth and eyes only to show expressions. They they transferred this to a cartoon image. Could you draw a range of the expressions you learnt in school on a piece of paper at home? Show how to exaggerate the eyebrows and mouth to show different feelings.
Reminders for the term ahead:
Reading Books
Books will be changed every Tuesday. Please bring reading diaries and books everyday. Please re-read phonics books at home to help build fluency.
PE Days
PE will take place every Tuesday and Thursday. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on these days.
Teddy
The children loved drawing their teddies in our observation art lesson so they have been asked to bring their teddy/soft toy back in on the 20th October. This is next Tuesday. They will be able to take it home the same day.
Thank you!
