Despite a slightly shorter week, the Owls have been incredibly busy! We have shared lots of wonderful ideas and enjoyed thoughtful, engaging conversations together.
In PSHE, we have continued our theme of “Being Safe,” exploring both the positive and negative meanings of this important concept. The children have shown great maturity, demonstrating that they know who they can trust and turn to in different situations, and what to do if they ever feel uncomfortable.
In Computing, the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring more of the block functions in Scratch Junior, particularly the green blocks. They experimented with creating a range of sound effects for their musical instruments, and we were very impressed with the creativity on display!
In Maths, we completed our learning on Time. The children have been learning how many hours there are in a day, understanding different times of the day, and recognising when a new day begins. Towards the end of the week, we began a new topic on Statistics. The children are developing confidence in interpreting information and creating tally charts, as well as identifying errors and determining the most and least popular items. Owls, can you show a grown-up what you have learned? Can you tell them how many hours there are in a day and name the different times of day? Perhaps you could even create a family tally chart together at home.
In English, we have begun preparing for our “Big Write” based on Spy Fox. The children have been writing their own resolution scenes and planning sequels to the story. They are becoming increasingly confident in identifying and using key grammar features such as adjectives, suffixes, conjunctions, and inverted commas — well done! Can you show a someone at home how to use inverted commas? Can you explain why we use them and the rules for including them in our writing? You might also enjoy reading a short story together and creating your own sequel.
In Phonics, we have been learning the w - or (er) grapheme and practising adding suffixes to g words. The children particularly enjoyed learning our “worm” song of the week to help remember these sounds, even keeping a tally of how many relevant words appeared in the song. Please continue to support your child’s reading and vocabulary development at home, and do encourage them to visit Spelling Shed for extra practice.
In Science, we continued our learning about living things and their habitats. This week, we explored different types of minibeasts and the environments they live in. The children especially enjoyed designing, making, and evaluating their own minibeast wheel mechanisms. Can you tell a grown-up about the different minibeasts we learned about? Can you describe a habitat for one of them? Can you show and explain how your mechanism works and what you enjoyed most about designing it?
Keep up the fantastic work, Owls — you are flying high! Have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to seeing you next week.
