WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

W/C 18.05.26

Another wonderful week has flown by in the Owls classroom! The children have been busy exploring new ideas, sharing thoughtful discussions, and showing great enthusiasm in their learning. Owls, we can’t wait for you to tell your grown-ups all about the exciting things you have discovered this week!

In PSHE, we explored what to do in an emergency and who can help us. The children learned the number to call for the emergency services and thoroughly enjoyed role-playing different scenarios where they needed to ask for help. We also discussed how important it is to only call the emergency services in a genuine emergency. Owls, can you explain to a grown-up what you have learned this week? Can you tell them why it is important to only call for help in a real emergency?

In RE, we revisited the idea of “belonging” by exploring Christian weddings. We discussed what a ceremony is and thought of different examples of ceremonies we may have seen or attended. The children enjoyed sharing their own experiences of weddings before sequencing the different parts of a wedding day and illustrating each stage. Owls, can you share some facts about a Christian wedding with someone at home? Can you explain what Christians believe about marriage? What did you find most interesting?

At the beginning of the week, the children completed a reasoning assessment in Maths. Some parts required careful listening as the questions were read aloud, while other sections allowed the children to independently apply the mathematical knowledge they have developed throughout the year. Later in the week, the children created their own pictograms by interpreting information from tally charts. They practised completing pictograms where totals were and were not multiples of 2, 5, or 10, and they also spotted mistakes by carefully checking the key. The children revised their 2-, 5-, and 10-times tables to help them find totals and calculate the difference between amounts shown on a pictogram. Owls, can you show a grown-up how to create a pictogram? Can you impress them with your times-table knowledge?

In English, we revisited past tense verbs, subordinating conjunctions, and similes. The children identified these features in sentences, practised writing them correctly, and created their own sentences using picture prompts for inspiration. Owls, can you explain to someone at home how verbs can change when written in the past tense? Can you spot any conjunctions or similes while reading a story together at home?

In Phonics, we focused on the “s” (zsh) grapheme. The children practised adding the suffixes -ing and -ed to words, as well as changing words into their plural forms. We also learned our “Treasure on the Television” song and enjoyed reading The Unusual Treasure, which focused on “s” words and related activities. Thank you for continuing to support your child’s reading and vocabulary development at home. Please also encourage regular practice on Spelling Shed.

In Science, the children continued their learning about plants by exploring different fruits and seeds and discussing how they grow. We also revisited what plants need in order to stay healthy and grow successfully. Owls, do you remember what plants need to help them grow?

Well done, Owls - you have worked incredibly hard this half term. Stay wise and keep soaring! We hope you all have a wonderful half-term break and look forward to welcoming you back after the holidays.
