Another busy week in the Puffins class! This week has involved towers, voltages and a cancelled sports day! (boo!) Read on to find out more!
In English this week, we started our new writing unit with our stimulus: The Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen. A story which follows Ade, a boy who notices buildings mysteriously collapsing and strange plants taking over his city. As danger spreads, he must find the courage to protect his unwell mother and face the challenges around him. The children have been really engaged with the story so far and we have used the first few chapters as inspiration to write our own poems comparing what the city was like before the Bluchers came and then after. The children created some brilliant poems using a range of figurative language features. At the end of the week, the children wrote diary entries from the point of view of Ade. They were able to empathise with his increasingly difficult circumstances and articulate how he was feeling at that point in the story.
In Maths, the Year 5s have completed their learning about decimals. We started the week by sequencing decimal numbers and then we learnt how to multiply and divide decimal numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. Next week the year 5s will be completing their final assessments of this academic year.
In Science this week, the children began learning about electrical components such as cells, wires, bulbs, buzzers, and switches, as well as the symbols used to represent them in circuit diagrams. They practised drawing simple circuits using the correct symbols and understand how each component works within a circuit. They were also introduced to the idea of voltage and how it affects electrical devices. They learnt that increasing the voltage by adding more cells provides more power to the circuit. This means a lightbulb will shine brighter, and a buzzer will sound louder.
Unfortunately, our Sports Day was cancelled this week due to the bad weather we have been having. We will hopefully share a new, rearranged date with you soon.
